ICC 2014 Riga

Information about the campus

Premises of the Strazdumuiza Residential School- Training Centre for Blind and Visually Impaired children

Our school consists of 2 joined buildings- school building and dormitory building. Dormitory building has its own entrance, but usually guests use the main entrance of school building also to go to the dormitories.

The main entrance is open from 8.00- 22.00, it is locked later, but person on duty will stay at the door also during the night. If you return to school later than 22.00, you must ring the door bell, and the person on duty will let you in.

The ICC 2014 participants and staff will be accommodated in the dormitories of the school. You don’t leave the building to reach the rooms of workshops- buildings of school and dormitories are connected in the 1st floor.

We kindly ask you to leave the room in the same state as you enter them. If you find any malfunctioning or damaged equipment in your room or anywhere around the camp premises, do not hesitate to let us know. We can only fix what we know about.

Laundry service

We have laundry service in our school. It will be open from 8.00- 9.00 every day except of weekends. If you need to wash any of your personal clothes, you must collect them in any packet or bag, add your name, and you or your NC must bring them to laundry room. You will get back your clothes washed next day in laundry room.

If you deliver your clothes for washing on Friday, you get them back after the finishing of workshops.

Your bed clothing and towels will be changed on August 7 (excursion day). So, before the breakfast you have to take off the sheet from the bed, the pillowcase from the pillow, put the sheet and the cover in the pillowcase. We kindly ask the NCs to collect all the „filled pillowcases” of their group and bring them to the laundry room. The clean bedclothes will be put on your beds when you return from the excursion. You will have to put on sheets and covers yourself.

Emergency exits

Emergency exits of the dormitory building are situated et the right end (if you enter from the stairs) of corridors in the floors 2-4. In the 1st floor the emergency exit is at the exit to school building. From all floors you can exit the building using the main exit.

The emergency exits of the school are the main entrance and the entrances at both sides of the school at the side stairs.

Cleaning of the rooms

Your rooms in the dormitory will be checked by the Office-cleaner once a day. He will clean your trashbins and wash the floor if necessary.

Medical care

The nurse will be available 24 hours during all the days of camp. If you need any medical help, you will get it in Room 115. which is situated in the 1st floor of the school building (close to main entrance).

There is the park situated behind the dormitory building. You can reach it through the main entrance of the dormitory building or gate of the yard which is situated on the right side of the school building (if you face the main entrance of the school).

„Bad habits”

We are glad that so many participants have accepted our invitation and we are sure we will have a lot of fun with all of you coming from so many different countries. In order to have an easy and agreeable stay together, we would like to ask you to follow a few rules:

The ICC campus as premises of Strazdumuiza Residential School- Training Centre for Blind and Visually Impaired children is an educational environment. As it is a place to teach and learn, we kindly ask you to keep alcoholic drinks away from the ICC campus and accommodation. Please note that even if in your home country you may be allowed to consume alcohol, according to the laws of Latvia you must not consume alcoholic drinks if you are under 18 years of age, but you can purchase alcoholic drinks only if you are 21. Alcoholic drinks will not be available on the premises of the camp. If you are planning to go to town to get traditional Latvian beer, please make an arrangement with your national coordinator.

According to the laws of Latvia it is forbidden to smoke on the premises of public buildings or within 50 meters around them. If you urgently need to have a cigarette, we kindly ask you to use the designated areas in the yard and to extinguish your cigarette in an ashtray (volunteers will show you that certain place). If you are not able to differentiate colours, please just let someone know you would like to meet a volunteer, member of staff, or another participant. Our assistants are usually just round the corner and will be happy to help you find the right person. Also, you can always find someone from the organising team in the camp office, which is in the 1st floor on your way to dormitory building.

You can reach the center of city and the closest shopping centre by buses Nr. 14 (stops at the school), Nr. 40 and tram Nr.6, 3 (volunteers will explain or show how to find the Stops).

You can go to the seaside by bus Nr. 29 (takes about 1 hour) (volunteers will explain or show how to find the Stop).

Tickets can be bought directly in the bus for 1,20€ each (one direction, one way).
At the terminal station of the tramway and the bus line 29 an designated kiosks / shops, you can buy them for about 0,60€.
Check here or directly at the company for information, also on timetables and transports available.
